More Than This

Synopsis: "A boy called Seth drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments, losing his life as the pounding sea claims him. But then he wakes. He is naked, thirsty, staving. But alive. How is that possible? He remembers dying, his bones breaking, his skull dashed upon the rocks. So how is he here? And where is this place? It looks like the suburban English town where he lived as a child, before an unthinkable tragedy happened and his family moved to America. But the neighbourhood around his old house is overgrown, covered in dust and completely abandoned. What's going on? And why is it that whenever he closes his eyes, he falls prey into vivid, agonizing memories that seem more real than the world around him? Seth begins a search for answers, hoping that he might not be alone, that there might be more than just this..."

Review: I have now decided that I love Patrick Ness' writing style. Everything is just described so clearly but still leaves some work for the imagination. The story itself was beautiful, it really had you hooked from the beginning. It was hard to figure out what was going to happen next, so obviously you would keep reading to find out what happens next. The character of Seth goes through a lot in this book. The way that Seth died is realistic, it has happened, and is still incredibly sad but then he wakes up and it all seems very odd, and the worst bit is that he remembers his death. No-one would want to remember that. The story is definitely unique, and Patrick Ness is a complete genius for writing this book. It was also my first Patrick Ness novel, so I think he has become an author that I'll read other books of. It's hard to put into words about his writing style, but there is just something about it that I love. It's hard to write a review for this, because anything beyond the fact that Seth drowns and wakes up in this mysterious place (which is said in the synopsis) is crossing spoiler territory and I was spoiled myself and do not want to do the same to you (but luckily I forgot everything the guy on my bus said before I read the book) because the purpose of a review is to tell you about the book and if I enjoyed it, not spoil the entire story for you. This book is quite heart-warming and is just incredibly narrated, and the transition of chapters seems quite smooth, it doesn't jump about from one thing to another, it all makes sense. There isn't much else I can say except that I recommend this book.
